Texas Royalty, Grazing the Shore of San Jose Island

There is no more enriching experience than spotting these splendid animals grazing the shores of San Jose Island, especially while flycasting to feeding redfish: Two Texas iconic images, one framing the other – a glorious sight – a work of art.

San Jose Island is home to 300 specimen Texas Longhorns. While this 21 mile long, 23,000 acre barrier island is largely uninhabited, the Bass family diligently maintains the herd and keeps the island pure. You may see these cattle when you pass by, or stalk a pod of reds or two, but you will probably never be lucky enough to catch this scene like famed Rockport flyfishing guide Chuck Naiser described to his good friend, Rockport artist Peter Fischer. Peter wanted to help Chuck share this image with everyone, and he wanted to get back to his true love, painting. The result is this distinctive and dynamic work in oil,Texas Royalty, Grazing the Shore of San Jose Island.

With the assistance of flyfishing guides Chuck Naiser and Scott Sommerlatte and flyshop owner Mike Wilson, this artwork has just been completed and printed as giclees in a limited edition of 400 prints. Chuck and Mike, fishing partners for many years and keenly aware of the currently ominous state of the Rockport area estuary, decided to make this venture a benefit dedicated to helping the dangerously scarce symbol of the Texas Coast, the majestic Whooping Crane. Whoopers spend their winters in the nearby marshes and on islands including San Jose, and the last two year’s drought conditions have taken a harsh toll – a serious decline in the blue crab population, the Whooping Crane’s primary food. Last year’s supplemental feeding program did not provide adequate relief, and we need to get more creative and aggressive in helping feed the birds. With proceeds from the sale of these fine prints, Chuck Naiser, working with the Friends of Aransas and Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuges, will help provide additional Whooper supplements and seek improved results.
